Second viewing thoughts and grades: Notre Dame

In his postgame press conference and comments on Monday, Addazio kept emphasizing how close BC is and how close these games are. After watching it back, I actually agree with him. But where Addazio sees the relative talent as even and a team playing well the majority of the game, I see it as an indictment of everything he's doing. If your team is close and in it, you shouldn't lose 29 points.

Offense: B-

Brown looked much better than last week. Some of his passes were a little behind or a little short (like that early one to Walker) but he made good decisions and overall, made good passes. He stayed poised in the pocket. I think we should let him run a bit. Not because he has speed, but because the plays are there.

Hilliman looked much much better. I know part of it was that he finally had some holes, but he also ran with purpose and got things to the second level. Dillon didn't get as many touches but looked decent.

Callinan played really well. He made some tough catches and also fought for yards. Jeff Smith did not look great and dropped two catchable balls. Thadd Smith got snuffed out on the jet sweeps. White was good. The Tight Ends blocked better, but the false starts were killers.

The OLine looked how they were supposed to look. Petrula got well deserved praise. The right side looked good. They all gave Brown enough time.

What I liked about the Loeffler's adjustment was that we rolled Brown more and used more play action. That helped settle him and gave the WRs space. I know it is ultimately Addazio's call, but I still think we get too conservative in the redzone. The 4th down call was not well executed.

Defense: F

The DLine needs to get better quickly. Landry is being misused and had some plays. I think at this point we need to give him the greenlight and just chase QBs. Dropping into coverage is a waste. Even reading and waiting is not what he does best. He did miss Wimbush on Wimbush's biggest run. Allen had a few tackles but is not making the impact promised in the summer. Ray needs to step up. Merritt had some good plays.

Richardson made some plays earlier but didn't make the stops as the game wore on. Schwab was fine. Bletzer is not playing poorly but he is not closing on enough plays and his speed looks suspect.

The DBs looked good in past coverage. They had problems helping the run. Look at ND's first big play. It came off a Moore missed tackle. Other than that, Moore played well. Yiadom was good. Dennis continues to play well. Harris was active and productive, but we need some game changing plays from him.

I am a Jim Reid fan and defender, but this was bad. It doesn't matter if you stop them on the majority of plays if it falls apart later. I wish we were more aggressive. I wish we would stop messing around with Landry and I wish we knew how do defend a simple zone read. It hurt us in all three games. We will be seeing it until we show we can stop it.

Special Teams: B

Special teams continues to be the lone bright spot. Other than Walker's fumble -- which BC recovered -- everything was good.

Kick offs were strong. Punt coverage good. Knoll is placing the ball well.

Lichtenberg did well.

Overall: F

I obviously spent a lot of time on the sequence before the half, but there is plenty of blame to throw at Addazio. Why does he keep punting from the opponent's territory? Knoll is making the decision seem smart by punting well, but most Pop Warner coaches know that the better move is to go for it. Landry's usage is also looking dumb. Whether he is hurt, you're trying to develop him in other areas or you truly believe you are resting him, the benefits are not showing. Addazio even said that DEs were not the problem on the first three scores. He's implying that even with Landry, Notre Dame still scores. But that is not a given. Landry draws extra attention and forced ND to switch plays. We can't assume anything about what happens if he had been on the field. Even how he used Wade late during the blowout is weird. Why not go for it there? Or give him more throws? What do you have to lose?

BC has many tough games ahead. Most should be competitive. However, if Addazio keeps coaching like he did this week, nothing will be close.

i guess all the smart guys want to blame Daz. not today

you all know nothing.

Daz got the offense working against ND. That was impressive. The offense were great until they got tired due to the defense getting off the filed too quickly. These 300 lb beasts need rest. They got tired because the Defense could not hold ND on the field.

Daz has zero to do with D. All you bitches know that. Don Brown rant the Don Brown show and was a winner. Reid runs the Reid show and is a loser. Simple shit even TGS and his son get.

Reid needs to be sent to Pawtucket ASAP just to get new life and give Daz a chance to win.

The last time I looked "close" is another way of saying "lost.' I was close to breaking the mile record, close to graduating, close to getting elected. Any coach who talks about being close is happy to be a loser.

Knuckler - not sure if Observer College hacked your account and this is satire but to borrow a phrase from you, please shut the eff up. Daz hired Reid. Daz is the HC. the D stinks is on the two of them. the offense isn't "working" - in the past 3 seasons against ACC opponents we have scored over 21 pts 1x. scoring 20 pts at home against a mediocre D is not evidence of things "working." Daz still coaches like a total wuss - that's not Jim Reid's fault.

would be surprised if we win 3 more games this season - UConn and Central Michigan should be W's, not sure where the 3rd W is coming. by the time we play Cuse the team will have quit.

Daz making this extremely easy on Jarmond - no excuse to still offer gainful employment to this clown. since Ryan Day left Daz is 3-16 against ACC/ND/Maryland. by my math that ain't good.

El Miz, well said. The team is definitely not motivated. Looking into their eyes during the game, and they looked like sad puppies. Truly hope they can find a motivator and coach who will bring the Heights back to prominence. Muddog out!

Do you really think we're going to beat Central Michigan with this clown leading the show, El Miz? The only way we're going to win more games is if the opposing team gets food poisoning or their bus breaks down on the way to the stadium. Clemson already has 100 yards on the ground and is up by a score against us and it's only Monday. FIRE DAZ!

What happened to the vaunted defense?

Exasperated! Has our new AD said anything?? Throw the season tix holders a life raft. Give us some hope. I saw him at my tail gate but he was not engaging in with the fans/faithful and what we had to say. 8 years of misery outside of Luke is too much. I keep renewing my tix but even I have a breajikng point. Daz sucks! Why are the due hards like me the only ones that see it. What the hell did he do at Temple?? Temple, we suppose to excited about BC hiring someone from Temple? You can't make this shit up!

A different take

Callinan, hilliman, petrula and the ND QB ,Winbush, all went to Saint Peter's prep in Jersey city.

Can we stop hiring also-rans from the MAC? Urban Meyer was like finding a needle in a stack of needles.

Gah for three million a year id strangle puppies on YouTube with my address clearly visible.

TOB was garbage too, at least he got paid lawyer money in the 90s.

And stop with hiring only practicing catholic coaches Leahy. Dumb policy.

BCI relates today that Connor is out for an extended time period with a knee injury. They are short on linebackers so they are switching Davon Jones from running back to linebacker. He was recruited as a defensive back so the reasoning is that he is a good tackler. Actually, he is their best running back. I hate to see it. Dillon will be very good but right now Jones has the heart of a lion.

Unknown said...

I agree, let's give Daz a 10 year contract extension through 2027.

Mutryn:

TOB was garbage? You mean you didn't like winning nine games a year, being ranked in the top 25, and beating schools like Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Clemson, Florida State, and Georgia?

Geezer eagle said...

Looks like the impersonation troll is back. Sick-em, Knucklehead.

TOB was great. Eight straight bowl wins. Six straight over ND. He and Bible were the greatest in coaching history at developing QBs. Three QB starters on this Sunday in the NFL were TOB trainees ( Ryan, Wilaon and Glennon). Also developed three superbowl signal callers ( Ryan, Wilson and Hasselbeck). TOB's critics are clueless.

rgmarine said...

my biggest concern with the game had to do with my perception of the players attitude during the fourth quarter ND offensive blitz. they looked completely demoralized and appeared to quit. This to me is a death knell for Daz. I'm fearful of the Clemson game. this could be an epic defeat. For the sake of the program Daz has to go. I have no illusion that a replacement will work immediate miracles but the program desperately needs a new direction. I'm praying that the BB program will show a big improvement as I am a 1967 BC grad and these past ten years have been the worst for following BB and football.

BC Coaches Jack Bicknell B+ Tom Coughlin A+ Tom O'Obrien B+

Other than Frank Leahy and Tom Coughlin BC has never had a Better Foot Ball Coach than the
above mentioned coaches. Tom O'Brien never lost a HOLY WAR and had that series near even.

He was a very good coach for a long period of time.

Baketball's Best Jim O'Brien And Al Skinner. Made BC Basketball a national power.

Bravesbill said...

TOB was a good coach, not great. Never was able to get BC over the jump given his knack for annual wtf losses. Great developer of talent but strategically not great.

BCAlum2000 said...

Agreed. TOB was a good coach and exactly what BC needed after the gambling scandal to right the ship and build a solid foundation. He however was never a great coach as he could never get BC over the hump. Its no coincidence that BC went to the next level the two years after he left. Jags/Logan used TOB's recruits and his solid fundamentals and combined that with a play to win attitude and the result was two ACC championship game appearances. Unfortunately for Jags, he was a terrible recruiter and honestly had no interest in coaching college football. More unfortunately for us, we then got Spaz and Adazzio after that. Two guys that have completely reversed all the progress and the foundation TOB built.

Anne Marie - I really liked Jack Bicknell, but B+ is too high. Without Flutie and Shawn Halloran, he was a failure, especially in 87,88,89 and 90. His teams couldn't even beat Rutgers.

Joe Yukica was very boring, but had some success at Boston College: 68–37. He was viewed as "The Man That Lifted The Program Up" The Yukica era was one which saw Boston College move into the ranks of a successful major football program. The big change was that BC was playing the lower echelon Division One teams... but under Joe (Yukica) this started to change." This change, this dramatic turnaround of BC football can be most clearly shown by looking at the Eagle's record against major Eastern opponents. BC's combined record from 1960-1967 -against Syracuse, West Virgina, Army, Navy, Pittsburgh and Penn State was a dismal 1-18. However, during the years 1970-1977, spanning the last 8 years of Yukica's BC coaching career, the record against these teams was 20-12.

Basketball - heck Bob Cousy wasn't bad -:); Tom Davis wasn't bad :-); Gary Williams wasn't
bad :-)

As for Jim O'Brien - 7 of his first 9 years in the Big East were pitiful, last place most of the time. Several times he only had 1 win and several times 3 wins for the season in the league. We all know what happened at the end. So I don't agree that he was a great coach, and he had absolutely no idea how to coach a big man.

JBQ said...

Jim O'Brien was sabotaged by admissions and left for Ohio State where he was not very successful. He had signed three big recruits from the Boston area. One was black. One was Latino. One was white. They were all rejected by the admissions office after he was assured that they qualified.---The political agenda was to get rid of him and Al Skinner was already waiting in the wings.
